How to Turn a Big Goal Into Manageable Steps Using the Define Planner
Big goals can be exciting, but they can also feel overwhelming.
You might know what you want to accomplish, but figuring out what to do this month, this week, or even today can be the hardest part.
That's why the Define Planner includes the Umbrella Goal-Planning System, designed to help you take a larger goal and break it into smaller, realistic actions you can follow through on.
Instead of trying to accomplish everything at once, you can work toward your goal one step at a time.
Here's how to use the Define Planner to turn a big goal into manageable monthly and weekly actions.
Step 1: Start With Your Pathway
Before choosing a goal, think about the area of your life you want to focus on.
The Define Planner organizes goals into six Pathways:
-
Career
-
Financial
-
Fitness
-
Health & Wellness
-
Personal Development
-
Relationships
Choosing a Pathway gives your goal direction.
For example, instead of simply writing:
I want to be healthier.
You might choose:
Pathway: Health & Wellness
Now you have a clear area of focus before deciding exactly what you want to change.
If you're having trouble deciding which area deserves your attention, read How to Choose Your First Goal When You Have Too Many.
Step 2: Create Your Umbrella Goal
Your Umbrella Goal is the larger goal you're working toward over time.
You don't necessarily need to complete it in one week or even one month. It provides a bigger direction to work toward while allowing your smaller actions to change along the way.
For example:
Pathway: Health & Wellness
Umbrella Goal: Build consistent routines that support my energy and overall well-being.
The goal is broad enough to work toward over several months while still identifying what you want to improve.
Think of your Umbrella Goal as the destination.
The next steps determine how you're going to get there.
Step 3: Decide What You Can Work on This Month
Once you know your larger goal, narrow your focus.
Ask yourself:
What is one part of this goal that I can realistically work on this month?
You don't need to tackle the entire goal at once.
Using our example, you might decide that this month you want to focus on creating a better morning routine.
Your monthly focus could be:
Create a simple morning routine I can consistently follow.
Then use the Monthly Action Items section of your Define Planner to identify the specific actions that will help you make progress.
For example:
Monthly Action Items
-
Create a simple three-step morning routine.
-
Complete 12 realistic movement sessions this month.
-
Prepare for the next morning the night before.
Now your larger Health & Wellness goal has become something much more manageable.

Step 4: Break Monthly Action Items Into Weekly Actions
This is where your goal starts becoming part of your actual schedule.
At the beginning of each week, turn to the weekly planning pages in your Define Planner.
Write your current Pathway in the Weekly Pathway Focus section, then look back at your Monthly Action Items.
Ask yourself:
What can I realistically do this week to move these forward?
You might write:
Weekly Pathway Focus: Health & Wellness
Weekly Action Items
-
Follow my morning routine Monday through Friday.
-
Complete three movement sessions.
-
Prepare clothes and water the night before.
Notice that you're no longer trying to accomplish a vague goal like get healthier.
You have three clear actions to work on this week.
That difference matters.
Step 5: Put Your Actions Into Your Schedule
A goal becomes easier to follow through on when you decide when you're going to work on it.
Use the weekly schedule in your Define Planner to give your action items a place in your week.
Instead of writing:
Workout 3x
Decide when those workouts can realistically happen.
For example:
-
Monday morning: 20-minute walk
-
Wednesday afternoon: Strength workout
-
Saturday morning: 30-minute walk
You can do the same thing with routines.
If one of your weekly goals is to create a morning routine, you might plan:
Weekdays, 7:00 AM
-
Drink water.
-
Get ready.
-
Take a 10-minute walk.
The Define Planner's morning, afternoon, and evening planning sections help you organize these actions around your existing appointments, commitments, and responsibilities.
Your planner now connects your larger goal directly to your everyday schedule.

Step 6: Use Your Weekly To-Dos and Reminders
Not every action needs to be scheduled at a specific time.
Use the other sections of your weekly spread to support your goal.
For example:
Weekly To-Dos
-
Wash workout clothes.
-
Refill water bottle.
-
Choose breakfasts for the week.
Personal Reminders
-
Progress doesn't have to be perfect.
-
Keep the routine simple.
-
Three movement sessions is enough for this week.
The goal is to make your planner work as a complete system rather than keeping your goals separate from the rest of your responsibilities.
Your weekly schedule, to-do lists, reminders, and action items can all work together to support the same larger goal.
Step 7: Track the Habits That Support Your Goal
The Define Planner includes monthly Accountability Trackers that can help you monitor the habits and routines supporting your goal.
Depending on your goal, you might use:
-
Fitness Tracker
-
Water Tracker
-
Daily Routine Tracker
-
Mood Tracker
-
Budget Tracker
-
Books, Audiobooks, or Podcasts Trackers
For our Health & Wellness example, you could use the Daily Routine Tracker to monitor three habits:
-
Drink water after waking up.
-
Complete morning routine.
-
Prepare for tomorrow.
The Fitness Tracker could help you monitor your 12 movement sessions throughout the month.
Instead of relying on memory, you can see how consistently you're following through and recognize patterns over time.
Your trackers also provide useful information when something needs to change.
Step 8: Adjust Instead of Starting Over
Some weeks will go exactly as planned.
Others won't.
If you planned three workouts and completed two, that doesn't mean your entire goal failed.
At the end of the week, look at what worked.
Maybe three 45-minute workouts were unrealistic, but three 20-minute movement sessions would fit your schedule better.
Adjust the next week's action items accordingly.
Your larger goal can stay the same while your approach changes.
That flexibility is an important part of creating a goal-planning system you can maintain.

This is how a goal that originally felt large and vague becomes something you can work on today.
Each step connects to the next, giving you a clear direction without requiring you to figure out the entire process at once.
Focus on the Next Step, Not the Entire Goal
You don't need to have every step figured out before you begin.
Start with the larger direction.
Then ask yourself:
What can I do this month?
From there:
What can I do this week?
And finally:
When will I do it?
The Define Planner helps you keep that process in one place, from your larger Umbrella Goal to the actions on this week's schedule.
Big goals are often accomplished through small decisions, realistic routines, and consistent follow-through.
Define what matters. Break it down. Put it on the plan. Then take the next step.
