Umbrella Goal Planning: How to Set Aligned, Long-Term Goals

Umbrella Goal Planning: How to Set Aligned, Long-Term Goals

Welcome back to Classes with Katelyn! I’m so excited you’re here. Today, we’re diving into one of the most foundational parts of your Define Planner—Umbrella Goal Planning.

If you’ve already worked through Section 1—Define Yourself, Define Your Year, your Personal Mission Statement, and your Vision Board—you’ve laid the perfect foundation. This is the moment it all comes together.

By the end of this class, you’ll be ready to choose meaningful umbrella goals in the major areas of your life and break them down into action steps that feel good, grounded, and doable.

What Is an Umbrella Goal?

Think of your umbrella goal as a long-term vision that covers a key area of your life. In the Define Planner, these areas (we call them pathways) are:

  • Career

  • Financial

  • Fitness

  • Health & Wellness

  • Personal Development

  • Relationships

Your umbrella goals aren’t just things you think you should be doing—they’re built from what you know about yourself. You’ve already done that work in Section 1. Now it’s time to use it.

How to Choose Your Umbrella Goals

Your Personal Mission Statement, Vision Board, and the reflection prompts from earlier pages all offer clues. Revisit those pages and ask:

  • What themes keep coming up?

  • What made it onto my vision board?

  • What values are in my mission statement?

Then ask yourself:
What area of my life is asking for the most attention right now?

For example:

  • If you’ve felt off in your body, it might be time to focus on wellness or fitness.

  • If you’ve been craving creativity or learning, personal development could be your focus.

You don’t need to set every umbrella goal at once. You can work on one pathway now and return to the others when it feels right.

Make It Specific (But Not Rigid)

A strong umbrella goal is:

  • Long-term

  • Values-driven

  • Clear enough to guide action

  • Flexible enough to grow with you

Let’s look at a few examples:

“Get healthy”
“Establish a movement routine that builds energy and reduces stress.”

“Do better with money”
“Create consistent savings habits so I can build financial peace.”

💡 Katelyn’s Tip: If you’re not sure what to choose, ask:
“What would change in my life 6–12 months from now if I committed to this?”
If the answer excites or stretches you, that’s your umbrella goal.

Sample Umbrella Goals by Pathway

Here’s how your goals might take shape across the six pathways:

🌿 Personal Development

Umbrella Goal: Read 24 books this year and attend in-person workshops or events that support my growth.

🧘 Health & Wellness

Umbrella Goal: Stay grounded and energized by nurturing a mindfulness routine that supports my joy and well-being.

🏃 Fitness

Umbrella Goal: Move my body consistently in ways that spark joy, reduce stress, and help me feel connected to myself.

💞 Relationships

Umbrella Goal: Show up fully in my relationships with presence, honesty, and a desire to bring out the best in others.
Create space for loved ones at least twice a month with intentional traditions and communication.

💼 Career

Umbrella Goal: Build a career rooted in authenticity, creativity, and helping others grow—on my terms.

💰 Financial

Umbrella Goal: Create a financial system that supports a life filled with creativity, freedom, and peace of mind.

Final Questions to Reflect On

As you craft your goals, ask yourself:

  • Is this goal a reflection of the version of me I’m becoming?

  • Does this support the values in my mission statement?

The Define Planner is all about helping you navigate with purpose. Umbrella goals give you direction and focus—without the pressure of perfection. They grow with you as your life evolves.
