How to Create a Monthly Planning Routine
A new month gives you a natural opportunity to reset, refocus, and decide what deserves your attention next.
A monthly planning routine helps you step back from the day-to-day details and look at the bigger picture. Instead of starting each week reacting to whatever comes up, you can enter the month with a clearer sense of your priorities, responsibilities, and goals.
The key is keeping your routine simple enough that you will actually repeat it every month.
1. Review the Month You Just Finished
Before you start planning what comes next, take a few minutes to look back.
Review your planner, calendar, task lists, and notes from the previous month. Pay attention to what you completed, what is still unfinished, and what repeatedly got pushed aside.
Ask yourself:
-
What went well this month?
-
What did I accomplish?
-
What still needs my attention?
-
What felt harder than expected?
-
Is there anything I no longer need to carry into the next month?
Not every unfinished task needs to move forward. Sometimes reviewing your month helps you recognize that something is no longer important.
The goal is not to judge how productive you were. It is to use what you learned to make better decisions about the month ahead.
2. Add Your Existing Commitments
Next, look at the entire month before you start adding new goals.
Fill in anything that already has a place on your calendar, including:
-
Appointments
-
Work deadlines
-
Birthdays
-
Events
-
Travel
-
Meetings
-
Recurring responsibilities
-
Personal commitments
This step gives you a realistic view of how much time and energy you actually have available.
A month that already includes travel, several appointments, and a major work deadline may not be the best month to take on five additional projects.
Plan around the life you already have before deciding what else you want to accomplish.
3. Choose Your Priorities for the Month
Once you can see your existing commitments, decide what you want to intentionally focus on.
You do not need to make progress in every area of your life at
